Cycling Supplements

If you are training for cycling, you need to eat a carefully balanced diet that meets the needs of the sport.  In the case of cycling this can be quite varied – all cyclists need endurance, but cycling also involves sprints, attacks and big hills, efforts that need powerful leg muscles.

That means that your training and your diet need to prepare you for both long endurance efforts as well as bursts of explosive speed.  Thus cycling requires a diet that keeps you lean while still building strong, powerful muscles.

The key to successful training for cycling is to build muscle while keeping body fat down.  While it is possible to be a successful cyclist while carrying extra fat, you will, nonetheless, not be achieving your full potential if you are overweight.  The extra fat will not only slow you down by forcing you to carry extra weight, it also negatively affects your VO2 max.

So how do you build muscle while keeping body fat low?  By eating smart.  Too many people think that because they are training hard – whether to build muscle or increase endurance – can eat pretty much want they want because of the calories they are burning.

This is not true – eating the right foods will not only improve your performance and speed your recovery between workouts, it will also help you to maintain a healthy ratio of fat to muscle.

Sports nutrition supplements can form a major part of your diet if you are training hard.  By combining the right supplements – for example whey protein to help your muscles recover and grow – with a healthy, balanced diet, you can get sufficient calories to fuel your training without adding extra body fat.

A quick look at any elite cyclist shows you that lean muscle is essential if you are to succeed at this sport, and that comes from hard training and smart eating.
